“Pir Dukha” (“The feast of spirit”) Exhibition

The organiser is SCCA-Almaty.
The exhibition lasts from the fifth of May till the thirtieth of June, 2001 year.

A great leader of proletariat V.I.Lenin said: It’s very hard without books. We were all agree with this saying and made up our minds to organise an exhibition of different books, which gladden us not only with its contents but with its form because the feeling of “beauty” is not foreign for us. Artists, designers and how it was not strange –writers, who are the true readers, responsed to our offer. We are sure that it is important to scrutinise each book. We would like every guest or participant of our exhibition has an opportunity to have tight straight contact in communication with a book.

So the idea about spirit’s feast was born.

That is why we open “The feast of spirit” exhibition, where sitting at the table you can enjoy reading a book in a company of adherents, masters or amateurs. You will not feel your loneliness and sham with the thought that “eating” books is not good and with the thought that nobody has done it before you because we offer you computer animation, where the process of absorbing food, not only spiritual, takes minds and paintbrushes of authors of past and present.

Our exhibition consists of four large parts. They are historical, folk creation, artist’s books and books-artist’s object.

“Historical” branch is a branch of literature, which was published by “samizdat”. The pages of magazine consist of “Foreign literature”, handmade catalogues, collection of poems. From this part you will know that the artist S.Maslov doesn’t only write articles and remembering about himself and his friends but he reads. He reads a serious literature, for example Joyce’s novel “Ulysses”, which he has gathered into two tomes and accompanied with different critical articles. Get acquaintance with a poetry of unknown poets, even being a child they wrote books decorating them with different illustrations.

Aaiaaeuneee aeuaii“Folk creation” branch is everything! Do you know any post-soviet house, where dembel albums (a special kind of art, which was done by soldiers before their demobilisation), which are not only a honey about their happy days during the duty in the army are not kept? They are men, who like to experiment and a vivid proof of this, for example, seven tomes of Igor Poluyahtov, Ablikim Akmullaev’s “Ha-ha-ha” etc.

"E-Ocei" A. Aaieaiaa“Artist’s books” is a branch, where books, which were written by artists and were published by their friends-publishers, are gathered. V.I.Lenin was the main artist, so you will enjoy reading the book, which was published in circulation of 70000 copies. This fact is a main difference of this exhibit‘s quality. Evidently colour, line, composition don’t always satisfy the artist. That is why he applies to Logos. We suggest you to read the poems of V.Komar and A.Melamid, Lidia Blinova’s poetry, to look through the text of former Almatynian Alexander Brener, now he is a famous Russian-Isralian-Austrian artist.

And the last branch “Book as a artist’s object” seems us more interesting. G.Ershov: “Modern artist destroys his imagination about the book as a “paper brick” with “polygraphical stuffing””. There is no anyone of our exhibition’s participants, who would not consent with this saying? Even names have high price: “Dark paper-roll” of Lily Kalaus, “Black book” of Alexander Miroshnichenko, “Black book of dissident” of Tahir Gabdrahmanov. N. Aoaaaeia "Ei?ai"The book-object “Koran” of Said Atabek can give a shock and anger. But if you look over you can remember Salman Roozhdy or you can consider about the history of Islam in Kazakhstan. Concerning the materials, which author uses, so it is not difficult to understand the symbol: a green background - green is a colour of Islam; a stone is a symbol of Holly stone Kaaba. And shock gives its place to consideration, and this is a purport of modern art. Levsha Leskova will seem just a fellow near Vsevolod Demidov, who has showed his version of famous “Book of changes”. Possibly today Seva is the only, who has computer technologies, all in all it gives a handmade object, which consists of simple nature materials like stones, ropes, wood and beads. In spite of its unpretentious the composition “Books of changes” expresses the gist and philosophy of “I Ching” exactly.
